T5,T8 & T12 LED Tubes
LED tubes are extremely popular energy efficient lamps used in Commercial, Industrial and public facilities for a variety of good reasons. Firstly, compared with their expensive-to-run fluorescent counterparts, LED tubes provide solid medium to long-term term savings on both energy and maintenance costs. But there are different types of lamps (T5, T8 & T12) that you need to be aware of.
The "T" in lamp nomenclature represents the shape of the lamp-tubular. The T in front is used to specify the shape of the bulb and lets you know that the LED light bulb is a Tube. Following the T, the numbering specifies the diameter of the lamp measured in fractions of an inch.
The
number following the "T" usually represents the diameter of the lamp
in eighths of an inch (1 inch equals 2.5 centimeters). T5 lamps have a diameter
equal to 5 times an eighth of an inch, or 5/8". These lamps are
approximately 40% smaller than T8 lamps, which are one inch in diameter, and
almost 60% smaller than T12 lamps, which are 1½" in diameter.
The T12 is an older generation fluorescent bulb that
generates light through electromagnetic induction, which is considered less
efficient method of creating light compared to that of newer electronic based
circuits. Like the T5, the T8 tube creates light through advanced electronic
circuits and are available in standard 2, 3, 4, and 5 foot lengths. However,
what sets T5 fluorescent lights apart from T8 bulbs is their dramatic reduction
in size. T5 lamps are 40% smaller than T8 fixtures, but are capable of
containing just as much and sometimes more light in a smaller area.
